My Story

I still remember the moment mum called me in tears to tell me that she wasn't coming to Sydney to help me with my babies, she had to go for more tests. It appeared she had breast cancer. Her tears where not because of her fear of what was ahead of her, but because she couldn't help me out as I prepped for a fairly small and routine surgery. Thats the kind of woman my mother is. ALWAYS puts the needs of others before herself. I was fortunate enough to be able to be there for my mother through multiple surgeries and her extensive treatment, and help her to come out the other side. Her positivity throughout her entire ordeal was awe-inspiring. Then last year as our family was drawing a collective sigh of relief that mum was cancer free and had come out the other side of treatments and surgeries, we received another devastating phone call. This time, Clare, our beautiful sister from another mister, younger sister to one of my childhood friends, Erin, and best friend to my sister Jenn had been diagnosed with that same awful disease. Clare is 27, and I can assure you it is extremely hard to reconcile that someone so young has to fight a battle like this.
What has amazed me about Clare and my mother is their strength in adversity and their ability to remain positive and not lose the skip in their step despite the battle they were (or in Clare's case 'are') fighting.
Which brings me to my moment of crazy. Anyone who knows me, knows i am no runner. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But if these two women, can endure surgery after surgery, and chemo and targeted therapy and radiation therapy, then I can get up and run. These incredible women have to breakthrough physical, mental and emotional barriers to continue their journey to beat this awful disease and that gives me the fire in my belly that i need to break through my own physical, mental and emotional barriers and run that distance. Mum and Clare, I can't fight your battles for you but I can remind you that we got your back!
Thank you to my sister for giving me the gentle push to do this, and to Erin (Clares sister) for your constant words of encouragement...you are both an inspiration to me also...WE CAN DO THIS!
I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of Breast Cancer Institute of Australia and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in The 2017 Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon presented by Qantas Assure. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Breast Cancer Institute of Australia, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.
